The article is focused on the analysis of the essence and specifics of building a society based on information technology and communication, on education and research, on innovation and on services directly related to knowledge. The authors' hypothesis is that the essence of the new society that emerges at the beginning of the twenty-first century is a result of the interactive and integrative influence of all new types of knowledge and innovation as well as of their multiple and, sometimes destructive, contradictory effects on the traditional forms of economic activity.
