This paper investigates the psychological aspects of intercultural communication, aiming to identify the obstacles and difficulties faced by intercultural communication, and to propose solutions to overcome them. Intercultural communication is a complex phenomenon and, accordingly, has several psychological aspects: perceptual, emotional, cognitive and motivational. All these aspects are interconnected and can both facilitate intercultural communication processes and generate communication barriers and situations of misunderstanding. The study identifies ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and prejudice as the primary impediments to effective intercultural dialogue. While each of these barriers presents distinct characteristics, they share the common effect of hindering meaningful communication across cultures. To foster successful intercultural interactions, it is essential to approach other cultures with respect and openness. Furthermore, individuals must cultivate intercultural competencies, including language proficiency and an informed understanding of the values and norms of their interlocutors. Intercultural education is a recognized method for combating ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and prejudice. It aims to foster positive changes in attitudes and behaviors towards cultural diversity by enhancing understanding and appreciation of different cultures. The research draws on a wide range of scholarly literature in the field of intercultural communication and employs methods such as analysis, synthesis, comparison, induction, and deduction. This methodological framework underscores both the complexity and the interdisciplinary nature of the subject under investigation. UDC: 316.72:316.776; JEL: M14, Z13 |
