Abstract:
Financial statements are the main sources of information for the stakeholders on which they base their decisions. But how accurate are the figures presented, how objective, relevant, and complete is the information made public so users can trust them and make the right decisions? Filtered through the accounting professional judgment, it automatically implies a certain amount of subjectivity, but in the context of creative accounting, information loses its quality, financial performance, attractive presented is actually impaired, and the interest of stakeholders is undermined. To forewarn users, this paper aims to present negative implications of creative accounting on the quality of information presented on the financial performance, exemplifying how they can be manipulated by techniques to maximize, minimize and smoothen the accounting result in particular, and other indicators deriving from it. The presented techniques demonstrate the hypothesis that the accounting truth is not an absolute one, but rather a built one. Finally, we propose ways to protect stakeholders against result management. The research methodology used for the development of the paper aimed at exclusively qualitative methods, the literature review is complemented by a critical analysis and reasoning, inductive and deductive, based also on law and accounting practice.
